Wood is a renewable natural product and has become a popular raw material for packaging. It is considered an all-rounder with abundant positive properties and can be used in many areas.
When it comes to quality packaging, wood has many advantages over other materials:
- High stability - rugged - Well recyclable - low weight - Environmentally friendly - stacks well - protect products and goods from damage - Versatile (available in any shape and size) - High durability - temperature resistant - easy to process - Suitable for road, sea and air transport
The IPPC Standard ISPM No. 15
The ISPM is the International Standard for Phytosanitary Measures and No. 15 contains the guidelines for regulating wood packaging material in international trade.
Accordingly, the International Plant Protection Convention (IPPC) stipulates how the respective wood must be treated prior to the desired use so that no pests or harmful organisms spread in the wood.
Likewise, in some countries the import of certain goods is only allowed in wooden packaging and only with prescribed heat treatment.
Heat treatment is carried out on the wooden pallets and sawn timber by heating the goods in a drying chamber so that the temperature in the wood core is at least 56 °C for at least 30 minutes (measured in the middle of the strongest element).
The treated wood must be marked with an ISPM stamp. This must show a country code, a regional code and a registration number.
